Marine Services: Survey, Consultation, Lecture

Charles E. Kanter, AMS®

Introduction to Marine Survey and my particular value.

Why a survey?

Surveys are needed for pre-purchase, insurance, financing, transportation, pre-race and other reasons where a professional opinion of condition and/or value is required.

Choosing a surveyor:

Choose a surveyor based upon his experience, knowledge and accreditation. Choose on the basis of his experience with the type of vessel of your interest.

Why choose me?

My specialty is production cruising catamarans. My strongest suit is consulting with potential purchasers, helping them understand their own needs, requirements and capabilities. I suggest that potential clients purchase and read my latest book: Cruising Catamaran Communiqué in order to fully advantage themselves of my experience and propensity to provide large amounts of nice-to-know along with the need-to-know information.

I perform surveys on all sailboats and some motor yachts and powerboats.  In my 30 years surveying, I have surveyed over 1000 vessels of different types, sailed over 100,000 miles and lived aboard sailboats for 15 years, given countless lectures and presentations, written several books and numerous magazine articles, and field tested many marine products for manufacturers.

I do mostly pre-purchase C&V (condition and value) surveys and I insist that the purchaser be at the survey. I do considerable consulting work and provide expert witness testimony.

My professional accrediting organization is:

Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS)

4605 Cardinal Blvd.

Jacksonville, Florida, 32210

800-344-9077 or 904-384-1494  www.marinesurvey.org

Limitations

No surveyor can or will warrantee a vessel.  Warrantees and guarantees are strictly the province of the manufacturer, designer, builder or dealer. A surveyor can only give you a reasoned professional opinion of the condition of the vessel and its legal compliance issues at the date of inspection within the constraints of non-destructive testing as described in the accrediting organization literature and on this page.
